SimpleSpeak
SimpleSpeak aims to ease loneliness in elderly populations that suffer from memory loss. The simplified interface allows them to easily contact their loved ones. It is an alternative to a smartphone. They can add contacts and call them. There is also a video call option.
This project was a collaboration between me and my classmate Maxine. My portion of the project was to focus on research and create the renderings.
Interviews
We started by interviewing a series of patients, doctors, caretakers, and therapists to see what the main areas of difficulty were for people with cognitive decline. These 4 areas stood out to us:
Forgetfulness, Loneliness, Embarrassment, Anxiety
Process
We started by making different sketches of what we wanted of our device to look like. We then interviewed elderly patients with mild alzheimer's and dementia to see how they felt about them. It was important that it was simple to use and easy to understand. This project was done over the course of 5 weeks.
Results
We proceeded with design 3 as it scored the highest overall.
